From the 1960’s to the Present, Filtrine Provides Drinking Water Solutions for ASU

Client:

Appalachian State University (ASU)

Location:

Boone, NC

Challenge:

Appalachian State University (ASU) is part of the 17-campus North Carolina public university system and is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Back in the late 1960s, ASU asked Filtrine to build water chilling, purifying and dispensing equipment for their cafeteria. In 2008, their facilities manager started looking for a water bottle filling station for their Student Union. Appalachian State University wanted to reduce the use of disposable water bottles with the goal of eliminating them altogether. Since Filtrine had built the first water bottle filling station in the early 1900’s, (see Drinking Water Solutions Update, March 22, 2016) it was a natural choice for ASU to order the latest Filtrine bottle filling station, Model B103

Solution:

The bottle filling station at the ASU Student Union had proven to be so popular that when ASU won a grant to update their drinking water system in their fitness center, they came back to Filtrine. They wanted to install new bottle filling stations right next to their current drinking fountains.  They were hoping to discourage the use of disposal plastic water bottles which are bad for the environment and require a lot of storage space. Sustainability is one of the core missions of the university. “Appalachian State University prepares students to lead purposeful lives as engaged global citizens who understand their responsibilities in creating a sustainable future for all.”

The Filtrine bottle filling station, 100% built in the US, from sustainable materials such as recycled stainless steel, helped to support the university’s core values. It goes along with their “Three E approach” challenging the students and staff to “consider if [our] actions are sustainable economically, environmentally, and equitably in relationship to our planet’s co-inhabitants.”
