There are significant advantages to using a central drinking water chiller/purifier to filter drinking water in building projects where lead removal, infection control, energy efficiency, and security are critical. With a central chiller/purifier/circulator, the facility management only needs to oversee the drinking water maintenance in one location instead of constantly maintaining individual point of use (POU) water filters/coolers scattered throughout the building. There is also significant energy savings over traditional POU cooling because only one chiller supplies multiple outlets. As an added energy benefit, the central chiller is located in a mechanical room or basement, where exhausted Btu’s can be easily vented outside (instead of back into hallways where they are fighting the air conditioning and driving up energy costs).

Especially in hospitality, hospital or healthcare settings, there is an opportunity for even greater energy savings by hooking ice makers and other potable water outlets up to the designated drinking water loop served by the central chiller. In delivering 50ºF water (instead of ambient temperature water) to an ice maker, you can reduce the energy consumption of that unit by at least 15%. In addition, the chilled purified water in the food service areas can be used for food prep, ingredient mixing and carbonators.
A building with (5) high/low drinking fountains and (5) ice makers can see savings of an estimated $845/year on electricity at $0.08/kWh by the installation of one central chiller. The maintenance savings is also impressive at $447/year, for a total of $1,289, for the first year of operation in “cost of ownership” savings. After year ten, the building owner will have saved a grand total of $15,474.
