Filtrine Model FC and FCC Electric Water Coolers Now Charged with R513A

Drinking fountain manufacturers have used refrigerants in electric water coolers for years.  A refrigeration system is a closed loop circuit in which the refrigerant absorbs heat where cooling is desired (in the evaporator) and then moves the heat to some other point (the condenser) where the heat can be rejected.  The refrigerant itself is recirculated over and over again.

Starting with the Montreal Protocol in 1987, there has been a push to ensure refrigerants do not harm the environment if they should leak out. Industries and manufacturers successfully switched to new refrigerants to stop the depletion of the earth’s ozone layer. Because of global warming concerns, the world continues to focus on reducing the potential for adding greenhouse gases to the atmosphere.  With Filtrine’s history of sustainability, using the proper refrigerants in its electric water coolers and remote chillers is one area Filtrine feels is highly effective in reducing the impact on the environment.

Beginning in early 2016, Filtrine began to transition towards significantly lower global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants while also increasing the energy efficiency of its electric water coolers and chillers.  Filtrine electric water coolers and remote drinking water chiller models have been using hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) refrigerant R134a with zero ozone depletion potential.  However, the new hydrofluoroolefin (HFO) refrigerants have all of the advantages of these refrigerants but much lower GWP.

Filtrine models that used R134a refrigerant to chill drinking water will now be charged with R513A which has 55% lower global warming potential (GWP).  At the same time, there is little or no loss in efficiency. In some cases, the efficiency improves by as much as 10%.

Decrease GWP of Refrigerants in Chillers

Filtrine remote chillers such as in-wall, free-standing, behind-wall, in-ceiling, cabinet insert and central, with the compressor horse power of 1 hp and below can also take advantage of R513A.

Models affected include Filtrine’s FC and FCC electric water coolers that feature a chiller and purifier. The Filtrine remote chillers such as in-wall, free-standing, behind-wall, in-ceiling, cabinet insert and central, with the compressor horse power of 1 hp and below can also take advantage of R513A.
