How to Know if Your Drinking Fountain is ADA Compliant
Whether you have installed a water bottle filler over an existing drinking fountain or have ordered a drinking water fountain with a bottle filler, you want to make sure that you are complying with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) regulations for water dispensing in your building or building plan. This is the case whether it is a single, double or triple bowl water fountain.
The question that often comes up from Filtrine’s customers in regards to its double bowl fountain, “Is the bottle filler in the cover plate over the lower bowl ADA compliant?” After reviewing the ADA guidelines, drinking fountains (installed correctly) with the bottle filler over the lower bowl do comply with the current code for people in a wheelchair.
As illustrated in the excerpt below from the ADA Standards for Accessible Design, revised in 2010, the bottle filler and its soft-touch activator are less than 48″ off the finished floor. The lower fountain protrudes less than 20″ out from the wall. Filtrine’s popular “Soft-Touch” water bubbler valve is also compliant with ADA standards because it requires less than 5 lbs. of pressure to activate.
