100 Years of Family Ownership - From Water Filtration to Chillers and Drinking Fountains

Hansel Filtrine Presidents from 1918 to Today

Filtrine was founded in 1901 by a druggist, George Kneuper, after devising a water filter medium he called “filtrine” which removed particles by molecular attraction. Seeing the potential of this invention, Charles Hansel (the current president’s great-grandfather) a sheep shearer turned engineer, bought Filtrine (located in a garage in Brooklyn, NY) in 1918.

Since then the company, now in its 5th generation of family ownership, has developed many industry firsts and continues its culture of innovation today. As business has grown, Filtrine has moved several times from Brooklyn to Waldwick, NJ, Harrisville, NH and is currently located in Keene, NH.

To tell Filtrine’s story, a branding video  (see History) was filmed at the plant which features the owners and employees at work. A company history wall was installed in Filtrine’s conference room that highlights the many “Filtrine Firsts” that propelled Filtrine to the forefront of the industry.

The timeline starts with George Knueper’s unique filter invention. After the Hansel family took over, the first filling station was born using the Filtrine K-System (named for George Kneuper’s filter design), purifying city water for office buildings and using ice for chilling.

In the 20’s, Filtrine invented the storage type electric cooling system. The storage design is still in use today, not only for drinking water but also industrial, medical and bakery processes. In the 40’s and 50’s Filtrine started building drinking fountains to go with its electric cooling systems. Eventually two divisions evolved, one concentrating on building chillers to cool processes and the other to manufacture drinking water dispensing equipment. For other Filtrine innovations, visit Filtrine Firsts.

Filtrine looks forward to constructing the highest quality, most durable products in the US engineered to fit customers’ applications, for many years to come.
