Hampshire College Selected Filtrine Drinking Fountains Because They Meet Stringent Sustainability Requirements

Since its inception in 2006, the International Living Future Institute’s (ILFI) Living Building Challenge has gained traction with architects and engineers in the US and Canada. Many examples of buildings that are in the pursuit of this challenge can be found on college campuses. Hampshire College is one of them.

With the goal of building “a living symbol of Hampshire’s values in practice and ideas in action”, Hampshire College wanted their new R.W. Kern Center to gain the Living Building Certification (LBC). This meant it would be a net-zero energy, waste, and water building.  The designers had to find a way to collect water and generate electricity without using city utilities. They also wanted to specify products and materials from local and regional sources, and avoid using anything that was on ILFI’s Living Building Challenge toxic “Red List”. After intense collaboration that included staff and students, consultants, architects and engineers, they were able to meet all these requirements. Once the water treatment system was designed, the team looked to Filtrine for the drinking water equipment.

Filtrine Manufacturing Company was the best choice, the plant is only 51 miles away, its products are 100% made in the US with mostly US parts and it could verify its drinking water fountain could be built without “Red List” materials. The specifiers decided on Filtrine’s Model 107-14-HL-VP-TM non-recessed drinking fountain and water purifier, located in a locking cabinet below. The fountain mounting plate is in low carbon steel, the regulator is made of lead-free brass and the drain is copper, all acceptable to ILFI’s standards.  (Also any Filtrine drinking fountain can be made touchless.) The Filtrine Taste Master® water purifier housings are made of stainless steel, the carbon elements are easily replaced and are biodegradable.

Filtrine is committed to continuing a tradition of quality products with a focus on sustainability. Working toward reducing its carbon foot print, Filtrine was proud to receive the first City of Keene’s (NH) Green Business of the Year Award in 2010. In 2010 it put in a solar hot-water system for its test facility and in 2013 the company turned the switch on its new 30 KWP solar array set on its factory roof.
