Filtrine Wooden Drinking Fountains Would Be an Attractive Addition to Timber Buildings
While accepted in other parts of the world, there has been a reluctance to design tall timber frame structures in the US. That is changing because of revisions in the building code and the interest in preserving the environment. The first 12 story mixed use wooden building in the US (Framework) has been cleared for construction after being granted building permits in Portland, Oregon. (2021 update – according to the website this project has been put on hold.) CallisonRTKL, a design consultancy of Arcadis, conducted research and 3D explorations to propose a 40 floor timber structure in Seattle. They published the Seattle Mass Timber Tower Feasibility Study/Design and Construction Analysis in August 2016. The fact that Seattle is located near large tracts of forest and the first US city to approve the use of cross-laminated timber [CLT] in six story office construction, this project may have a chance to come to fruition.
Inspired by similar reasons such as proximity to New Hampshire’s woods, a focus on sustainability and access to some of the finest furniture makers in New England, Filtrine designed and built a beautiful wooden drinking water fountain, the 14” diameter Model 108-WD. It is comprised of a bronze bowl encircled with fine New Hampshire cherry wood (finished with multiple coats of impermeable Tung Oil) and an ADA compliant soft touch bubbler. While Filtrine engineers did not have the mass timber construction buildings in mind, the unique 108-WD drinking fountains would complement the rich wooden interiors or any other interior designs.
Filtrine Model 108-WD single or the dual Model 108-WD-HL wooden deck drinking fountains can be made out of any type of wood. The “Hands Free” option is available with any Filtrine drinking fountain or bottle filling station.
